Why Rutherford County Has Wildlife Problems

Rutherford County sits on limestone, and the rock is never far under your feet here. Where it breaks the surface, the soil runs too thin for normal forest, and what grows instead is cedar glade: open, rocky ground edged in red cedar, rare enough that the state protects 846 acres of it at Flat Rock, east of Murfreesboro. Where the soil runs deeper, oak and hickory take over and drop the acorns that carry squirrels through the winter. And down the middle of everything runs the Stones River, a wooded corridor that passes the 570 preserved acres at Stones River National Battlefield and leaves the county as Percy Priest Lake.

Then there's the speed the county grew: fastest in Tennessee from 2016 through 2022, thirty percent in the decade before that.
