Our clients had groundhogs in their yard for years. At first they were living under the shed, but the second year they had also moved under their large wrap-around deck. By the time they called, there were multiple entry holes dug around the perimeter of the deck. At first they wanted to relocate the groundhogs, but we explained that not only was that the least humane option, but it was also the least effective. These burrows were going to attract more animals who would come move in once the groundhogs were gone. They'd be fighting an uphill battle, and some of the animals who might move in could be worse than the groundhogs themselves. They decided to try out our more humane options first. We fully excluded both structures using permanent underground barriers to prevent digging. After this was completed, we evicted the groundhogs using one-way doors over the remaining openings. That same day, immediately prior to eviction, we flooded the yard with deterrents. The combination of being evicted from their homes and smelling the deterrents in the yard made them uneasy enough to move on and take up residence elsewhere.

Why Cheatham County Has Wildlife Problems
Cheatham County is mostly woods. Steep, narrow ridges cross the whole county with hollows between them, oak and hickory on the dry ridgetops and heavier hardwood down where the water collects, and the Cheatham Wildlife Management Area alone keeps 20,810 acres of that forest standing in the middle of the county. Two rivers wrap the rest of it, the Cumberland passing Ashland City and the Harpeth winding through the south end at Kingston Springs.
All that forest feeds and waters everything in it. The ridgetops drop acorns and hickory nuts every fall, the hollows hold water and shelter year-round, and the river bottoms stay thick with the insects that bats hunt. If your house sits on a wooded lot here, it sits inside the overlap between our world and theirs, a clearing with forest on every side.
The animals adapted to that overlap a long time ago. As we took over more of their territory, generations of squirrels, bats, birds, and other wildlife learned that our properties are full of resources: food, water, and shelter. They have no way of knowing that a house isn't a natural structure like any other.
Squirrels and raccoons found out that garbage cans are a reliable food source. Birds, squirrels, and rodents utilize bird feeders the same way. Groundhogs discovered that gardens are filled with delicious foods near the shelter of decks and sheds. Skunks learned that crawlspaces are a safe place to raise a baby, and bats learned that attics give them not only safety to raise their babies but the heat they need to do so optimally. Birds found that our vents are safe replicas of the cavities in trees that they nest in, but without predators being able to climb to them as easily. All of these animals have learned not just to survive but to thrive in the new environment that we have created for them.
And this is also why eviction is always our first option instead of relocation. Sending these animals to new environments that they are not adapted to makes their odds of survival drastically smaller than letting them stay where they are currently.

Exclusion and sealing work is always done on the exterior of a house. After papers have been signed and deposits have been paid, we can work on the outside of the house whether our clients are present or not.
Case Study: A Year of Home Remedies
By the time our client called us, he had spent a full year trying to solve his squirrel problem himself. His attic was filled with ultrasonic repellers on an extension cord and mothball boxes. The squirrels were still there. They were entering through a chewed opening behind the gutter line that was up far higher than his own ladders could reach. They had removed insulation and made themselves multiple nests a couple feet down the vertical wall voids, completely unfazed by his attempts to frighten them away. We threw away the mothballs, advising him to never use those again, and set to work solving the problem properly. Several access points required a forty-foot ladder to reach.
